GENERAL
Can I apply for MM2H if I’m married to a Malaysian?
Yes. Foreign spouses of Malaysian citizens are now eligible to apply. Note: Malaysia does not recognize same-sex marriages
I used to be a Malaysian citizen. Can I apply with my foreign passport?
Yes. Former Malaysian citizens may apply. We have successfully assisted many in this situation.
Do I need to relocate immediately after approval?
No. You have up to 6 months to collect your visa after approval. You are not required to move immediately, but applicants under 50 must reside in Malaysia for at least 90 days per year. Property purchase is required within one year of approval.
Can my long-term partner and I apply as a couple without being married?
No. Unmarried partners must apply separately and individually qualify for the visa.
Does MM2H grant Permanent Residency (PR)?
No. The MM2H visa does not lead to PR and cannot be converted into PR status.
Why are there so many conflicting MM2H requirements online?
Many websites have outdated information. We’ve been a licensed MM2H agent since 2005 and maintain up-to-date details. If unsure, please contact our Help Desk.
How much do I need to live comfortably in Malaysia?
A modest lifestyle is possible with a low income. However, a couple should ideally budget around RM10,000/month (~USD 2,400) for a comfortable standard of living.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Do I need to show income or assets?
No. Proof of income or liquid assets is no longer required. However, you must have sufficient funds to place the Fixed Deposit and purchase property, as well as support your living expenses.
Do I need to be in Malaysia to apply?
No. Applications can be submitted remotely. However, upon approval, you must travel to Malaysia to complete a medical check-up, place the fixed deposit, and finalize insurance and visa endorsement.
How long is the visa processing time?
The estimated processing time is up to 13 weeks. Actual processing may vary, as the new programme is still being implemented.
FIXED DEPOSIT (FD)
Is a Fixed Deposit required for every applicant?
No. Only the principal applicant is required to place the FD. Dependents are exempt.
Can I deposit cash in person after arriving in Malaysia?
Yes, but you must first receive your conditional approval letter to open a Malaysian bank account. Note: Cash imports are limited to USD 10,000 (or equivalent) per person.
Is interest from the FD taxable?
No. Interest earned is tax-exempt.
What is the typical interest rate on the FD?
Rates vary by bank, but are currently around 3.0% per annum.
Should the FD be placed in USD or MYR?
You may place the deposit in either Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) or USD, depending on the bank’s policy and exchange rate.
When can I withdraw 50% of the FD?
Once your visa is endorsed in your passport, up to 50% of the FD may be withdrawn for:
- Residential property purchase
- Education expenses
- Medical treatment in Malaysia
- Domestic tourism (e.g., local flights, hotels)
PROPERTY OWNERSHIP
I already own a home in Malaysia. Does this count?
Yes, pre-existing property can fulfill the homeownership requirement. However, it does not qualify for a 50% FD withdrawal unless purchased after visa endorsement.
How long do I have to buy a property after approval?
You must purchase a qualifying property within one year of visa approval. Agents are expected to verify compliance. Non-compliance may result in visa revocation.
What types of property are eligible?
You may purchase residential properties, including SOHO units and serviced apartments. Senior living communities (leasehold or membership-based) are not currently eligible.
Can property ownership be shared with non-visa holders?
Yes, co-ownership is allowed with individuals listed in your conditional approval letter.
SPECIAL FINANCIAL ZONE (SFZ)
Is the SFZ limited to Forest City in Johor?
Yes, for now. Forest City is currently the only approved zone. Further expansion to other areas is expected, but no timeline has been provided.
MINIMUM STAY REQUIREMENT
Is the 90-day stay rule mandatory for all participants?
No. Only applicants under the age of 50 must spend a minimum of 90 days per year in Malaysia. Those 50 and above are exempt.
Can I average out my stay over several years?
No. The 90-day stay must be fulfilled each year. The first year is calculated pro rata from the date of visa endorsement.
EMPLOYMENT IN MALAYSIA
Can MM2H visa holders work?
Only participants under the Platinum category may be employed in Malaysia.
Silver and Gold category holders are not allowed to work.
Note: Being a shareholder or director is also considered employment under immigration law and requires a separate employment pass.
CHANGING THE PRINCIPAL APPLICANT
Can MM2H visa holders work?
Can a dependent take over the visa if the principal passes away?
Yes, the principal may designate a dependent as successor in the event of death. However, the exact transfer process is still being finalized by the government. It is strongly advised to prepare a will in Malaysia for smoother transfer of assets and visa continuity.
